From
ROGER OVERHOLT
Chief of Police
The Morristown Police Department is dedicated to using all available resources to combat crime within our city. The Police Department works with several local, state, and federal agencies to address issues such as illegal drugs, acts of violence, illegal immigration issues, and internet crimes against children.
With the support of Mayor and Council, we currently utilize the following programs in an effort to provide effective law enforcement within our community:
· Project Safe Neighborhood: A program that allows us to federally prosecute individuals who possess or use a gun and who meet additional criteria such as being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, undocumented aliens in possession of a firearm, and drug traffickers in possession of a firearm.
· High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force (HIDTA): This program couples municipal, county, state, and federal agents together to combat illegal drug activity and “white collar crime.”
· Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC): The goal of this unit, working with both state and federal authorities, investigates and prosecutes individuals involved in crimes against children via computers.
· Third Judicial Drug Task Force: This program targets individuals who participate in illegal drug offenses on a large scale.
The Morristown Police Department along with City Council has petitioned the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency to participate in the 287G Program, which allows local law enforcement to assist Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents in the fight against undocumented aliens. At this time federal officials have advised that funds are currently not available to support this request.
The Morristown Police Department’s specialized units such as the Explosive Ordnance Unit (EOD), Crisis Negotiations Unit, and the Special Response Team are designated by the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security as regional response teams to be activated during critical events. This designation brings in funding for the units, equipment, and training.
Along with the aforementioned programs, The Morristown Police Department utilizes personnel assigned to Patrol duties, Investigations, Support Services, and Narcotics and Vice to ensure a safe community for our citizens.
Thank you.
